Introduction
The lab of Dr Pablo Gastaminza is focused on deciphering molecular events underlying Hepatitis C virus infection and how to exploit certain metabolic pathways to inhibit this infection. Previously they performed Cryo soft X-ray tomography (cryo-SXM) at the ALBA synchrotron to investigate the ultrastructural alterations induced by the interference of HCV replication with cellular homeostasis. They observed that mitochondrial and ER alterations could be reversed by prolonged treatment with a combination of clinically approved direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) for the treatment of chronic HCV infection.
Update
In CoCID they are currently focused on repeating the ALBA study using the lab-scale SXT100 and then determining the sequence of events that follow HCV replication blockade by pharmacological inhibition of different components of the viral replicase.
