CoCID is an EU-funded project whose primary objective is to develop a next generation, laboratory-based, soft x-ray microscope (SXM) as a research tool to accelerate the understanding of disease mechanisms and the associated development of novel therapeutics at the single cell level. The major innovation of this project will be in demonstrating the utility of the lab-scale SXM in virology research.
Some of our CoCID members will be presenting at the upcoming M&M conference sharing their knowledge and findings on their virology research which has been aided by SiriusXT’s SXT-100 Soft X-ray Microscope. Traditionally having only limited access to Soft X-ray Microscopy as only a small number of Synchrotrons worldwide have this technology, SiriusXT is opening doors to new research possibilities as their SXT-100 is the only commercial Laboratory based Soft X-ray Microscope.
Dr. Chris Evans, University College Dublin, has done fascinating research into Hepatitis E (HEV), studying viral replication in human hepatocytes and the SXT-100 helped reveal insights to him that other imaging techniques could not. He will give a talk on “CoCID: compact cell imaging device for correlative investigation of Hepatitis E infection” (C05.1)
Dr. Pablo Gastaminza, Spanish National Biotechnological Centre (CNB-CISC), has done extensive research into direct-acting antiviral (DAA) as an effective therapeutic for Hepatitis C (HCV). His poster will elaborate on the topic of “Rapid HCV replication machinery removal after antiviral treatment with direct antiviral agents monitored by multimodal imaging” (C05.P1)
Prof. Maija Vihinen-Ranta, University of Jyväskylä, Finland, has prepared a poster on “ Herpesvirus-induced manipulation of the nucleolus” (C05.P1) which highlights how Soft X-ray Microscopy can be used in correlative imaging workflows to learn more about the structure and effects on the nucleus of a cell when infected with herpes (HSV-1).
